I am not quite sure of the origin of this story but I heard it from a Yoruba storyteller, perhaps its a Yoruba story perhaps not. I told the story at a storytelling meeting, it was then retold and published in an newsletter by Julie Long:
———–One Hat———————————————
Lucifer decides to stir up trouble in a small town, he put on a hat that was
red on one side and black on the other site. He then walk down the middle of
the main street, passing people to the right and passing people to the left.
When he had gone, the townspeople talked about the stranger.
“He had a red hat on”
“No, he had a black hat on”
“Red”
“No,black”
“Red”
“Black”
So it went on until one half of the towns people were fighting the other
half of the townspeople.
Hidden in a bush, in a garden nearby. Lucifer rubs his hands with glee.
What a shame that the “red hat” and the “black hat” did not discover the
truth together.
